09/02/2010 : Moving Day!

I love this time of the year: The transition from summer to fall and the beginning of a new term (appealing to me because I'm way past my school days; hardcore studying was never really my thing). After a quiet summer period, where a lot of Aarhus citizens have been away on holiday, the town is coming to life again.
In my neighborhood a lot of students are passing on their way to and from the university, and at this time of year you'll meet small groups of freshmen from China, USA, Spain and Western Jutland with open faces and Aarhus maps in the hand.

It's an annual event that regiments of cars with trailers are parading the streets of Aarhus on the last Saturday in August. It's the day where new students are moving to Aarhus in numbers that make you think that half of the population is being replaced.
I think it would be appropriate if this day became a new national holiday in Denmark; it could be called “Moving Day”!
This year “Moving Day” was also the day where my love and I, after four months in exile, were moving back to our refurbished apartment (we're talking extreme makeover). In our rented car we were going to move belongings from our temporary residence, drive worn-out stuff to the recycling plant and bring the bookcase we were going to buy home. And as we zigzagged between vanfuls of furniture we almost felt like we were part of- and not spectators at- this yearly migration rite.

The bookcase we were looking for had to meet certain requirements: It should be white, spacious but not too deep, and the shelves should be movable in order to fit both small paperbacks and a huge bible with Doré illustrations, and what would be more obvious than searching for it in the “bible” that has published more than the Christian Bible: The IKEA Catalog?
After thorough research we found what we were looking for in the catalog and we headed for the “temple” on Graham Bellsvej. When we entered the department store we realized that thousands of students plus parents had past the “moving-stuff-from-childhood home-to-den phase” and gone into the “supplement phase” and again we got that funny feeling of being part of something and at the same time being in a totally different place in life.
Maybe I should go back there- with my walker- in a few decades and see if some of the same people will be there again, maybe with a couple of kids, looking for second or third generation of “PAX” or “Elgå”, or what they are called at that time.
